Aalborg Portland's establishment in the 19th Century
Portland cement. That was what the Englishman Joseph Aspdin called the product mixed with limestone and clay, which he patented in 1824. "Portland" because of the similarity of building stone from Portland in England - and "cement" from the Latin cæmentum, which means hewn stone.
In the 1880s Aalborg businessman Hans Holm, his childhood friend from Skive, engineer Frederick Læssøe Smidth suggestedto build a cement factory in northern Jutland. The choice fell quickly to Rørdalgårdens land, approx. 4 km northeast of Aalborg.
The necessary capital was raised by the three partners in the firm FL Smidth & Co.. A / S: Frederick Læssøe Smidth, Poul Larsen, Alexander Foss and Hans Holm, and company Aalborg Portland-Cement Factory was founded on 16 october 1889.
Aalborg Portland's major milestones in the 21st Century
Aalborg Portland (Anqing) Co. Ltd. commissioned a new plant at the beginning of 2010. With an annually production capacity of up to 700,000 tonnes of white cement, the Company becomes the largest producer in Asia.
Sinai White Portland Cement started up the production in the new second kiln line, doubling the capacity to 1,100,000 tonnes annually: the biggest white cement integrated plant worldwide in terms of capacity.
On 1 March 2008 Unicon A/S acquired the company Kudsk & Dahl A/S in Vojens.
Kudsk & Dahl A/S was a well established family owned company with a leading position within aggregates and the leading supplier of ready-mixed concrete in the area of Southern Jutland.
Investment in a new plant in China has been initiated: the new kiln would have an annual capacity of up to 700,000 tonnes of white cement.
1 January 2006 Aalborg Portland and Unicon were merged into one organisation consisting of a corporate holding and three business areas:
Grey cement - Aalborg Portland Grey cement
White cement - Aalborg Portland White cement
Ready-mix - Unicon Ready-Mix concrete
All companies have a long and successful history: from the cement factory, which was founded in 1889 to the ready-mix concrete company established in 1927, to today's global company.
Unicon acquired the cement factory plant "4K" from the Mexican cement and concrete group Cemex, taking over all of 4K's activities in Denmark. Unicon now owns 46 plants in Denmark, having a total production capacity of 1.5 mil. m³ cement. Unicon's activities in Poland are at the same time sold to Cemex.
Aalborg White OOO(Ltd.) was established. The company based in St. Petersburg will be supplying white cement to the Russian market.
The Italian Caltagirone Group aquired, via its ownership of the cement group Cementir S.p.A., the shares of Aalborg Portland A/S and Unicon A/S from FLS Industries A/S. Unicon became a subsidiary of the Aalborg Portland Group.
Aalborg White Anqing Co. Ltd. was established. The company, which has a yearly production capacity of 80,000 tons of white cement at the plant in Anqing, situated 600 km. west of Shanghai by the Yangtze river, is Aalborg Portland's subsidiary in China, responsible for the white cement activities.
