    The cement of the future

One of our main research activities is to develop the cement of the future.

Aalborg Portland has conducted research into CO2-reduced, high-strength cement for more than 20 years. We have developed a new process which reduces energy consumption and emission of both CO2 and NOx while cement strength is increased. This can be exploited either by reducing the concrete cement content or replacing part of the energy-hungry clinker with mineral additives.

This development was continued in the FUTURECEM project supported by the Danish National Advanced Technology Foundation. The goal was to reduce the CO2 emission and energy consumption from the cement production by developing new supplementary cementitious materials (SCM) using locally available raw materials. The results indicated that the right combination of finely divided chalk and the new components makes it possible to replace up to 30% of the clinker in certain types of cement.

This challenge has prompted the Danish National Advanced Technology Foundation to fund a further project, SCM, in which development of the necessary production equipment for the new cement materials takes place in partnership with FLSmidth, the Nanoscience Centre (iNANO) at Aarhus University and the Department of Energy Technology, Aalborg University.

The Danish Council for Strategic Research has funded a further project, centred on iNANO and involving universities and institutes in Denmark, Norway and Switzerland. This project is called LowE-CEM. The aim is to investigate the potential for even further CO2 reduction. The project will study suitable technologies for application in the long term, i.e. after 2020.

    Ongoing research

Our aim is to reduce the CO2 emission from cement production by up to 30%.
